CALL FOR PAPERS
TITLE /
ARCHITECTURE, CITY AND LANDSCAPE: DESIGN IN CONTEXT OF CRISIS
New challenges for Teaching, Research and the Practice of Architecture
THEME /
Planet Earth is going through a period of profound CRISIS, putting at risk its survival and, consequently, that of the Human Being. This crisis, climatic, environmental, social, economic and, today, also sanitary, if not stopped or reversed, threatens a systematic and complete destruction of natural habitats, the mass extinction of species, and the possibility of ending life in the Planet as we know it.
Climate change, resulting from predatory, unbalanced and uncontrolled human actions on nature and its limited resources, which characterizes the Anthropocene, has serious consequences on the Planet, causing global warming, desertification and the melting of the poles, the consequent rise in sea level, the increase in forest and urban fires, the increase and greater severity of natural disasters, and a dramatic loss of biodiversity.
These factors of unbalance, in turn, promote social and political conflicts, giving rise to migrations, pandemics and serious social, economic and human problems, with evident consequences for Architecture, the City and the Territory.
THE 10TH PROJETAR 2021 | LISBOA proposes a critical reflection on the widespread CRISIS in which our planet lives - climatic, environmental, social, economic, sanitary - and how the same crisis has been transforming and will continue to transform Architecture, the City, the Territory and the ways of dwelling, and seeks solutions on how we can find new paradigms for a more balanced relationship between the Human Being and his Environment, through Research, Teaching and the Practice of Architecture.
Assuming that Architecture is “a way of seeing, thinking and questioning our world and our place in it” (Thom Mayne) and “a means of improving the quality of life of people” (Diébédo Francis Kéré), the following questions are raised:
How do we see, think and question our world, based on Architecture and its Project?
In the current context of CRISIS, how can we contribute to improving the quality of life of people, the community, the cities, the landscape, the planet, through Research, Teaching and the Practice of Architecture and its Project?
THEMATIC AXES /

. TO THINK
This thematic axis proposes a reflection on the challenges that the context of the CRISIS - climatic, environmental, social, economic and sanitary - pose to the thinking of Architecture and the City.
This critical reflection aims at the search for new solutions, proposals, projects, models, utopias, which can constitute innovative answers to relevant upcoming issues - for which the Project must help to find solutions at an environmental level: global heating, desertification and melting of the poles, rising sea levels, the increase in forest and urban fires, the increase and greater severity of natural disasters, and the dramatic loss of biodiversity; and at the social and political level, migrations, poverty and exclusion, pandemics, among others.

. TO BUILD
This thematic axis proposes a reflection on technologies, processes, systems, solutions, materialities, tools and methodologies that can contribute to the construction of a more sustainable, ecological, humanized and resilient Architecture and City, more adapted to the natural, geographical, cultural, human context, which guarantee lower energy and resource consumption, seeking to reestablish the balance between the Human Being and the Environment.

. TO DWELL
This thematic axis proposes a reflection on how the climatic, environmental, social, economic and health crisis contributed to an acceleration, at times radical, of the transformation in the ways of inhabiting Architecture, the City, the Landscape and the Territory. It proposes a reflection on new paradigms of housing, public facilities, public space, urban and city infrastructure, which can contribute to achieving a more balanced, more humanized, more sustainable and integrating relationship - socially, environmentally and economically - between the Human Being and the Environment.
